Since 2011, Towersey Playing Fields Committee has been working hard to improve and protect this much-loved community space. Step by step, with the help of local residents, businesses, and events, we’ve already transformed parts of the site - and laid the groundwork for our biggest project yet: our Community Pavilion.
The Playing Fields have been at the heart of Towersey life for decades. Originally established as a shared community space, the fields have hosted everything from village fêtes and sporting matches to informal gatherings and celebrations. Owned by the Towersey Parish Council, the site has long been a place where neighbours come together, friendships are formed, and community spirit thrives.
Over time, the facilities have aged and no longer meet modern needs - but the spirit of the site remains as strong as ever. This rich history is what inspires us to invest in its future, ensuring it continues to serve as a vibrant hub for generations to come.
1965 – The very first Towersey Festival was held to raise funds for the village Memorial Hall.
1968 – The Playing Fields were purchased for £4,400 by Dennis Manners, Louis Rushby, Earnst Worland, and Frank Honniball.
1971 – Chinnor Rugby Club was granted a 25-year lease.
1972 – The original clubhouse was built by club members and local volunteers. That same year, the Playing Fields were formally donated to the village, to be held in trust for community benefit.
1986 – Chinnor Rugby Club relocated to Kingsey Road, and the clubhouse was sold to the Towersey Playing Fields Association for £7,000.
2014 – The 50th and final Towersey Festival was held in the village.
2015 – The first Towersey Fringe event was staged to raise funds for a new clubhouse.
2020 – TPFC signed a 150-year lease to manage the site.
2021 – The existing clubhouse was condemned following lack of use during the Covid pandemic.
This rich history inspires our vision for the future - to create a modern Pavilion that honours the past while meeting the needs of today and tomorrow.
Phase 1 – Children’s Play Area → £36,000 raised and work completed. A safe, modern space for local families.
Phase 2 – New Storage Building → £48,000 raised and work completed in 2024, now allowing local community groups to safely store their equipment.
Phase 3 – Pavilion Project → £29,000 spent so far on architects, planning applications, surveys, and fundraising consultancy.
Together, these investments show our commitment to steady, sustainable progress.

So far, we’ve raised over £250,000 through community effort, events, and donations. Highlights include:
Towersey Fringe Festival → Our flagship comedy and music event, attracting over 5,000 people each year and raising more than £158,000.
Village Fête → £9,105 raised through local stalls, games, and fun.
Other donations and grants → £21,708 generously given by individuals and organisations.
We know that raising £1.25 millionis a formidable challenge. But with our track record, expertise, and community support, we believe it can be achieved.
Our plan is to complete the Pavilion project in stages, as funds allow - ensuring every pound raised is put to good use and delivers visible progress.

Every brick, every event, every pound raised brings us closer. The Towersey Playing Fields Committee, alongside volunteers and supporters, is committed to seeing this project through - creating a space that will serve the community for generations.
